StC, Stop the Cuts campaign at Sussex University- a campaign that should be repeated at every university in the country to stop education cuts

Pic shows Dave Hill (in the red scarf) leading the march with the student leaders of the Stop the Cuts campaign.

At Leeds University, UCU, the Universities and Colleges Union, voted for strike action against cuts and compulsory redundancy plans made by the university management. Guess what! As a result, the university management are `reconsidering their plans'.

Sussex University management is also announcing plans for job cuts. A determined Stop the Cuts campaign is demonstarting to stop the cuts. Actions so far have included an occupation/ sit-in. Dave Hill, a former Governor of Sussex University, and Professor of Education, called for universitty workers and students across the country to take similar militant action against job cuts.

Save Phoenix Nursery!

More than fifty campaigners came out on a rainy morning to lobby the board of Brighton University Governors outside of Mithras House on Lewes Road. The mixture of participants, from the very young to the old provided a vibrant display with local media turning out to cover the demonstrations. Trade Unions banners from Unison mixed with home made signs and placards but all with the same message: Save Phoenix Nursery!

The proposed plans to merge in July the Phoenix Nursery with the One World crèche in Mouslecoomb will likely result in the loss of jobs not to mention the detrimental impact on staff and students who rely on the childcare facilities.
Management had not even planned to inform staff or crèche users until March, it wasn't even on the agenda at the Governor's meeting. But word leaked out the anger amongst people was very clear today.

Local supporters of the Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition joined the demonstration and the parents and workers have our full support. TUSC candidate for Brighton Kemptown was for many years Chair of the Brighton Campaign for Nursery Education, and organised many meetings and demonstrations to increase state nursery education provision in Brighton. Partly as a result of this campaign, more schools in Brighton opened nursery classes so Dave is fully behind the nursery and the Unison campaign.

Come and find out about the Trade Unionist and Socialist election campaign, hear Dave and national TUSC sponsor Rail Union leader Bob Crow at the Brighthelm centre at 6:45pm, 9th March.

Brighton Trade Unionist and Socialist Election Campaign Launch

Tuesday 9 March 6.45pm Brighthelm Centre

Speakers:

Bob Crow RMT General Secretary,

Hannah Sell Socialist Party Deputy General Secretary,

Dave Hill your TUSC Brighton Kemptown Parlimentary Candidate

Come and hear why the coalition has been formed, why you should support it and get involved in the campaign. Bob Crow is probably the best known union leader in Britain today and has a reputation second to none for defending his members jobs, pay and conditions. He is a key supporter of the Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition and will be explaining why at this meeting.

The Socialist Party has been campaigning for a New Worker's Party for many years and its public representatives always only take a worker's wage when elected, a far cry from the expense scandal ridden MPs most of us have to put up with. Hannah Sell the Deputy General Secretary of the Socialist Party will be speaking on how the coalition nationally can be used to put forward polices in the interests of the millions, not the millionaires.

Dave Hill is the coalition candidate for Brighton Kemptown and has many years experience representing the people of Brighton when in the Labour Party. He will be explain why we can no longer rely on Labour to protect jobs, public services and pensions, and why people of Brighton should vote for the Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition to do just that.
